Our History
Late Miss Anubhuti Bose, B.A, B.T, UCTD (Manchester), Dip-in-Ed(Cal), Trained in Jhon Tracy clinic, USA, Ex Head-in-charge Girls section of Calcutta Deaf and Dumb School, Ex Lecturer of N.I.H.H. Eastern Circle, and Training Collage for teachers was a noble and dedicated lady. She had spent her full life for the cause of the Hearing Impaired (Deaf) Children. Moving across globe and attending Seminars, giving lectures, reading her papers on the subject at different cities in UK, USA, Japan, Hongkong etc. She had a penchant to make a school for these children who could be taught in oral language with an objective that they can go to the normal stream of the society after completing their studies in special school and take up higher studies and ultimately stand at their own feet and earn their livings. With this idea in mind and urge to make these H.I Children to speak & become a productive citizen later, she started teaching voluntarily beginning with 2 (two) students only in 1978 in a small car garage in Kolkata. Her versatile knowledge in the subject and a strong dedication and willpower bore fruit when this institution was born and registered under West Bengal Societies Act in 1985. The school was shifted to its own building in1996, Miss Anubhuti Bose died at the age of 80 on 22nd November 2004.
FAQ: Supporting Your Child’s Journey
My child was just diagnosed. I feel overwhelmed. Where do I start?
It is completely normal to feel this way. The first step is a Functional Assessment at our clinic. We will also pair you with a "Mentor Parent" from our community—someone who has walked this path and can offer personal guidance.
At what age can my child start at Parents’ Own Clinic?
We believe in "Early Identification, Early Intervention." Our Home-Based Program starts as early as 6 months. Our formal Specialized Preschool accepts children from age 3.
Can my child ever transition to a regular "mainstream" school?
Yes! Our primary goal is to provide the foundational language skills (spoken or signed) that allow children to succeed in any environment. Many of our students transition to mainstream schools by Grade 1 or Grade 6 with our "Bridge Support" program.
Do you teach Indian Sign Language (ISL) or Oral/Verbal communication?
We follow a Total Communication philosophy. This means we tailor the method to the child. Some children thrive with ISL, others with Auditory-Verbal Therapy (AVT), and many use a combination of both. We respect every family's choice for their child’s "first language."
Are there government schemes available to help with the cost of devices?
Yes. We assist eligible families in applying for the ADIP Scheme (Government of India), which can provide free or subsidized hearing aids and cochlear implant surgeries for children from lower-income backgrounds.
What is the teacher-to-student ratio in the classroom?
To ensure every child gets the visual attention they need, we maintain a strict 1:6 ratio. This allows our Teachers of the Deaf (ToD) to monitor each student's comprehension in real-time.
Support us & Donate
Our biggest constraint is fund. The Grant given by the Central Govt. covers less than 60% of the total expenses incurred at the school. For the rest, we are dependent on Public donations, which are uncertain. As a result, the small reserve fund of the school is dwindling every year. We earnestly appeal to all of you to support us and donate, so as to enable us to gain strength and sustainability and save this institution, which had its run for last 41 years for a noble cause. Your financial support will certainly enrich the deaf children enormously and help them to grow for a better tomorrow.
The school is registered under societies Indian Trust act 1882 and Donations made to the school are exempted under section 80G of Income Tax Act, 1961 vide Unique Regn. no: AAATP3222F25KL02 dated 25.09.2025.
